Welcome!

Welcome to my School in Film blog! Receiving an education is one of the most important parts of the lives of children all over the world. Since schooling is so pivotal, it is often a focal point of popular films. I will use school films to discuss broader social issues about the true purpose of education. My hope is that, through this blog, my readers will better understand all of the roles that school plays in our lives and in the America we have come to know so well. I want to look at these school films critically so I can examine the social meanings. Not only will I discuss films, but I will also be using a book about the topic by Robert Bulman called Hollywood Goes to High School: Cinema, Schools, and American Culture. This blog should be a place where readers can add to the conversation and discuss their own experiences in school as well as add to discussion about the purpose of schooling and the impacts it has on our lives. Talk to you all very soon! There are great things to come, including:

  • Teach - Scenes from Episodes 1 & 2: "Back to School" and "Tested"
  • Hard Times at Douglass High
  • Waiting for Superman
